A projectile is any object propelled through space by the exertion of a force which ceases after launch. Although a thrown baseball could be considered a projectile, the word more often refers to a weapon. For details of the mathematics surrounding projectile trajectory, see equations of motion.

Projectile?
Q. A projectile is shoot vertically upward with a given initial velocity. It reaches a max height of 100m. If on a second shot the initial velocity is doubled then the projectile will reach a max height of?

A. Your first working equation is: Vf^2 - Vo^2 = 2gh where Vf = final velocity = 0 when the maximum height is attained Vo = initial velocity g = acceleration due to gravity = 9.8 m/sec^2 (constant) h = maximum height Substituting values, -Vo^2 = 2g(100) = 200g Your second equation is the same as the first except that the initial velocity is 2Vo. Therefore, -(2Vo)^2 = 2gh or - 4Vo^2 = 2g(h) -Vo^2 = (2g/4)h -Vo^2 = gh/2 Since -Vo^2 = 200g then 200g = (g/2)h h = 400 ANSWER: If the initial velocity were doubled, then maximum height of the projectile will be 400 meters.

A projectile is launched from the ground at a certain speed and angle which results in the projectile travelin?
Q. A projectile is launched from the ground at a certain speed and angle which results in the projectile traveling to a maximum height of 13.3 m above the ground. If the projectile is kept at the same angle, but the speed is doubled, what would the maximum height now be in meters? Hint: if you are overwhelmed, pick any angle and find the initial velocity to produce the given maximum height. Then use the same angle and double the initial velocity and find the new maximum height.

A. Maximum height of the projectile projected at an angle with the horizontal and velocity u H (maxm.) = u^2 sin^2 / 2g => H(maxm.) is proportional to u^2 for the same angle => if the speed is doubled, maximum height will be quadrupled => maximum height will be = 4 * 13.3 m = 53.2 m.

Q. How does the downward component of the motion of a projectile compare to the motion of free fall? When you answer the question, please also explain WHY, because I don t just want the answer, I want to learn also =)

A. because with gravity...the speed of an object accelerates...at about 9X speed per second (on earth)...but it eventually finds a fixed speed because of wind friction...a projectile with just motion will continue at the same speed/inertia until another force acts upon it...then it might change direction or speed...the speed atwhich a projectile falls b/c of gravity = the same speed it falls in free fall under the same conditions
