What is the remedy for a pulled ligament in the upper arm/shoulder area?
Q. I believe I pulled a ligament or two in my upper arm. It is quite painful when I stretch the arm in wrong position. If I go to the doctor, he will most likely want an MRI done. I don't have good insurance and so want to avoid one of those expensive procedures. Anyone had this happen and what was the remedy? Pain pills and time? What if I keep irritating it with everyday activities, will that slow the healing time?
Asked by SeekingAnswers - Mon May 21 17:01:52 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yes, it will take longer to heal if you keep overusing it. Without really knowing how serious the pulling is, i would say for now just rest as much as possible, and ice the area as much as possible. However, if a tear has occured, MRI and surgery would be the next step. Moniter for now and try to avoid activities that use/move that part of your arm.

How soon can round ligament pain start in pregnancy?
Q. I'm 7 weeks pregnant. When I walk around too much I start getting sharp pains in what feels like my ovaries, but I'm not sure. I have to lay down for awhile or it wont go away. I think this is round ligament pain but haven't heard of it starting so early. I don't have my first appt until next week or I would have asked my obgyn already. Any idea's?

A. I have had the same feelings since around 6 or 7 weeks pregnant. I am now 20 1/2 weeks pregnant and it still happens on occassion. The baby is perfectly normal and everything is going well with my pregnancy. I don't think it's anything to worry about. Just lay down and relax when it happens--sometimes walking slowly helps it too.

Q. My mri shows anterior cruciate ligament tear I've been asked to do some physio exercises for about 3 months before the doc finally decides if i need a surgery .When can i start playing football ??? Is surgery must for football ??? What is the cost involved in arthroscopic surgery in Mumbai???

A. mostly partial acl tear gets healed by physiotherapy. but you can't play football for a long time...probably never, but to play football you need to go for arthroscopic repair which costs around 60-70thousand in a good centre, plus medicines and hospitalisation charges.

M.R.I? i tore my ACL playin football and have just had a cruciate reconstruction,i got diagnosed wrong like 6 times,if you have torn one of the 2 cruciate ligiments, then they dont really repair as they have no blood supply,so operation is only option, unless ya can strenghten the muscles enuff to support the knee better,if its one of the ligiments on the inside or outside of the knee then im pretty sure if its just a little tear they can heal themselves,im proper bored not playin football,my physio will take around 10months too a year, but i cant wait too get back,i did read in a magazine about ``body repairing`` that banana`s that have gone brown [over ripe] are good for ligiment and… [cont.]

How long does it take for a torn ligament to heal?
Q. My ankle ligament or whatever it is called was torn yesterday. I really need to know how long it takes to heal because I'm going to Mexico in two weeks. I'm guessing it will take a few weeks to heal because it's my first major injury and 16 years old. Also how often and how long should I leave ice on my ankle.

A. ok, need more specs;; did it tear completely??;; did you have surgery??;; is the doc wanting you to have it heal on it's own??;; were you even diagnosed??;; are you casted??;; tissues actually take 6wks to heal if everything is in play, but that may be 6 wks from injury, 6 wks from surgery;; hard to tell with such limited info;; & just cuz the tissue heals in 6 wks does not mean you are ready to go @ that time;; all depends on the segment & what it does (how it functions) & if you've been compliant to the doc's orders regarding healing this "ligament";; it also takes time for this tissue to accept the activity you introduce it;; a lot of self-monitoring once you know what you're to do with it;; hope you're talking to the doc...good luck,… [cont.]

How to treat a torn shoulder ligament?
Q. I went to the doctor the other day and was told I have a possible torn shoulder ligament. I am debating whether or not to get an MRI due to the high cost, even with health insurance. Even if my ligaments are torn is there anything that can be done to fix it? Should I forgo the MRI and rely on ice and advil?
Asked by Sarah - Mon Jun 8 12:56:43 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. We had possible torn shoulder ligaments long before there were MRIs. You should ask your doctor to skip the MRI and recommend a conservative treatment. If it doesn't get better after a reasonable period, you can go back to him/her.

How can you recover from a torn ligament in the knee, without surgery?
Q. I've torn the ligament in my knee playing basketball, and i've reinjured it a few times, what's the best thing i can do to recover without surgery?
Asked by thecontender123 - Sat May 31 07:10:14 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I can't quite anwer this question without knowing a lot more. Which ligament? Were there more than one ligaments that were torn? Was there any damage to the meniscus? Was it a partial tear or a complete tear? Have you seen an Orthopedic surgeon, gotten an MRI, and been advised to have surgery? Or given a rehab program? What rehab efforts have you undertaken? You see, your question is one that requires some careful thought. If you haven't seen an Orthpedic surgeon or had an MRI, then you need to do that first and get these questions answered.

Does the muscle and ligament pain continue through the whole pregnancy?
Q. In all my life no on told me that I would have so much muscualr and ligament pain during pregnancy. I thought it was something that happened in the third trimester but I have had pulling muscular and ligament pain since about 4 weeks pregnant. I had about 1-2 weeks off during weeks 13 and 14 and it has now started again in week 15. Will this pain continue throughout the whole pregnancy and if so, how on earth do some women go their whole pregnancy without knowing they are pregnant?

A. Mine has come and gone at different times but for the most part it happens all the way through with a few breaks here and there. I have often wondered the same thing not just the pain but the kicking and everything. seems hard to not know it is there. But maybe those people that don't know they are pregnant just have more pain on a daily basis. So it doesn't seem as out of the ordinary.

how long should a ligament take to heel on you ring finger?
Q. I dislocated my finger 2 days ago and also done my ligament in. Any tips on quick healing?
Asked by neil p - Thu Nov 9 06:43:31 2006 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Hi well this all depends how bad the dislocation was and also how bably tou tore the ligament.Dislocations can take anything up to 2 mths to heal properly, and the ligament which surrounds the finger can take anything from 6-8wks,you have to remember when you dislocate any bones they are all surrounded by ligaments, tissue, muscle so all off these have to get bck to the way they wore before you injured your finger so it will take time im affraid.Rest the finger as much as possible, and see you gp if not getting no better in a mth or so.Good Luck

Whats the difference in feeling, a pulled muscle in the bicep, or a torn ligament in the bicep?
Q. Whats the difference in feeling, a pulled muscle in the bicep, or a torn ligament in the bicep?? I have pain in arm after using free-weights.
Asked by Rick O - Mon Sep 15 11:48:01 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. With a torn ligament, you wouldn't be able to keep weight lifting. You can strain the ligaments and muscles though. Be sure you are lifting correctly and not over extending the joints. You may need to give your arms a break for a little while and take some Tylenol and allow the muscles to heal. If a rest and some over the counter anti-inflammatory medicine does not ease your pain, it is time to see your doctor.

How can you tell if you Tore a Ligament in an ankle?
Q. yesterday i was sprinting and i rolled my ankle. it didnt swell but it hurt really bad and it went numb for a minute. today it is swollen. i took ibuprofen and i have my ankle elevated and compressed and iced, but im scared that i might have torn something. how can you tell if a ligament is torn?
Asked by Emmy! - Sat Jan 9 14:24:45 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You're doing everything right! As long as you can move everything, you most likely just sprained your ankle. Give it till Monday, and if it's not better, take it to a doc. Do however take 800mg of ibuprofen every 8 hours, this is the prescription dose

Does a partially torn ligament in my knee require surgery?
Q. I'm 15 years old and very athletic. I play soccer about 5 days on 7. I underwent MRI scans a couple of days ago and today i got the results and the lady on the phone said she thinks that theres a small tear in one of my ligaments(she did not mention which one). Will it require surgery? How long will it take to heal? And do soccer players usually get a lot worse talent wise after a torn ligament or they just get back to normal with a bit of rehabilitation?
Asked by Mike - Tue Jan 26 18:42:46 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Hi. I hope I can help. I don't think you will need surgery since she did say "small" and usually all ligaments, unless the ACL is significantly damaged, can heal well without surgery. Some ligaments such as the MCL aren't even operated on if it's a full tear. You will need to, however, get an opinion from an orthopedic surgeon (doesn't mean you need surgery if you see him/her). Treatment will most likely including crutches, immobilizer, icing, and physical therapy to help the knee regain strength, stability, and flexibility. I think ligaments take 2 to 6 weeks to heal depending on the amount of damage. You will probably need a few weeks of therapy in there so you might be out a while. How's the pain though? Swelling? Stiffness?… [cont.]
