How long can an incision from hip replacement surgery leak clear fluid?
Q. My 88 year old Mom broke her hip last week and they had to replace most of it. She is in a physical therapy hospital to get moving around again. The only thing is that the incision keeps leaking quite a bit. Has anyone else had this problem and how long did it last?

A. It should mostly stop after the first week to 10 days...and if the glue is being used, even less than that. There may be some small drainage for those first couple weeks, but nothing that should require the bandage to be changed more than once a day after the first few days.. A recent patient of mine came to outpatient therapy two weeks after his surgery and the hip was draining rather significantly. We sent him to the surgeon right away, the fluid was aspirated and he had to be "resealed" with the glue again. He did have a mild infection which had to be drained and treated with antibiotics and eventually he had to have it stapled shut. If they are having to change the bandage more than once a day after 7-10 days, I'd recommend the… [cont.]

What should the incision site look like on a cat after spay after 2 weeks?
Q. I took my cat back to the vet a week after it was done and he said she had a reaction to the sutures and gave her a shot of penicillin. The incision is still raised on the edges and looks like a hole in the middle. I want to take her back, but I don't want to be the crazy cat lady. As far as I can see there is no oozing or smell. She is alot more skidish since it was done and also attacks (bites/scratches) a lot more then she used to. The thing is I live in a small town and the vet comes from about an hour away twice a week, so I cant just drop by. I think that if by Monday (when the vet is in town) it is still not looking right, I will take her back over. Thanks!

How long does it take for an incision to be considered closed?
Q. I was wondering what the time table for healing skin incisions. I had surgery and have a considerable incision length and line of sutures. It's been 7 days since the surgery and I was wondering when the skin is considered closed. Then at what point am I out of danger of the wound opening? I'm anxious about getting my stitches out next Wednesday. Seems awfully soon.

What should i do if my cats incision from being spayed is infected?
Q. My cat got spayed about 4 days ago. She is almost back to normal..but ive never had a female cat before so im not exactly sure what the incision should look like afterwords. She has been picking at it and ive stopped her but im afraid that it may be getting infected. It looks red and the stitches look really tight as if she pulled on them. Is there anything i can do without having to take her back to the vet? Or is this normal?

I was just as you are worried and for most likely no reason. I rushed her back for a check up of the incision (it was free or charge) and my vet reassured me she was FINE. I took her in at 5 days which is most likely what your now seeing. I'd describe her incision sort of like a puckered lips, and dry. This is NORMAL! Do not put lotion or anything on it!!! Your kitty will lick but most incisions are internal so the chance she's pulled anything is slim. It will look a slight pink/ red color and puckered. How long will it take for my incision to heal after thyroid surgery?
Q. I had my thyroid removed. It's almost been 2 months & I still have pain where my incision is. That area also feels really tight. Is this normal? how long will it take to heal?

A. It is common for a surgery site to be tender to the touch for even as long as a year. The scar itself usually heals within 10 days to two weeks depending on how strong your metabolism is. The reason the skin feels tight is because of the location of the scar. The skin around your neck flexes a great deal which puts stress on the the scar. Make sure to use sun block on the scar whenever you go outside. New scars are very light sensitive and will darken more than the skin surrounding it and will make the scar more noticeable. I have Hashimoto's disease which means my thyroid basically "died" and I will be on thyroid medication for the rest of my life, as will you. Make sure to get a really good endocrinologist to help with your… [cont.]

My kitten is crazy even an hour of being spayed? How easily can her incision open?
Q. She's been running around, licking the incision and running around even more. She's tried to hop a few times as well. She isn't even tired. How easily does the incision open? Should I put her in her carrier?
Asked by Louise - Fri Jan 15 18:53:00 2010 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. try to keep her from licking it. I think it isn't too hard to break the stitches so make sure she isn't tearing at them. My cats have never done this before. They have always been heavily sedated. i would put her in her carrier but that won't necessarily stop her from licking it. call the vet and see if they can give you any help.

Cleaning the incision site after dog was spayed?
Q. Any tips on how to keep the incision clean and healing correctly? Her vet just said to keep an eye on it, and I'm just curious what others have done. Thanks!
Asked by Chelle - Tue Feb 5 16:27:27 2008 - - 15 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Ok, if you feel you need to clean it - then you need to take her to the vet. It should heal naturally, however if it swells at all - you must take her back to the vet to try to stem the likely infection.

Should my husband have liquid draining from his incision after a vasectomy?
Q. My husband had a vasectomy 3 days ago and his incision is leaking some kind of fluid, he is still in a lot of pain and his scrotum is swollen, is this normal?

A. What does the drainage look like? If it is clear, it should be fine. If it is red, pink, brown, yellow, or green, go to the ER. It could be an infection starting. Call your doctor anyway, actually. They may want to put a drain in there anyway to help facilitate the drainage escaping.

Is it normal for a canine spay incision to drain pinkish liquid?
Q. I got my 11 m/o GSD spayed yesterday (bad idea because I can't call my vet over the weekend!) and the incision is slightly pink, the swelling seems to be normal, but a small amount of this drainage has leaked out, about a a teaspoonful at at a time-twice since the surgery. I don't want to take her to the emergency vet and cause her more stress if this is normal.

Why would a doctor choose to let my incision heal naturally instead of closing it with stitches?

What material is used to Close median incision.?
Q. I've gone through AVR surgery in December 2007. Doctor made a median incision and opened my Rib Cage, but I wonder how they close the skin, do they use some kind of soluble thread or some other bonding material. All they did with my incision is that they removed some wire/thread on my last day in hospital. Please tell me which material they are using and what this technique is called.

A. Sternal closure is done with wiring the sternum together; the layer of flesh on top is stapled together until it heals. Thereafter, the staples are removed. The wires binding the sternum underneath are permanent. Ralph

Asked by Kisses <3 - Mon May 18 19:52:45 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Signs of infection could be any of the following: fever redness/swelling around the wound swelling under the wound seepage of pus from the wound hot feeling around the wound If in doubt, don't wait to become really sick. See your doctor for a check up. Your baby needs you. I had a C-section and a bad infection afterwards. The only symptom was a high fever; the infection was internal. My sister had a C-section and she had an abscess under the wound. The wound seeped pus, which was how she knew she had an infection.

Q. My dog just got fixed around five days ago and she has this strange lump that looks like swelling or maybe something is forming under the incision. Can someone please tell me what's wrong?

A. Call an ER vet. If she is not eating and vomiting, something could be terribly wrong. Sometimes that bump can cause irritation, and reopen the incision or cause internal hemorrhaging . Keep her calm, no jumping of furniture or running up stairs, over activity is what caused this problem.
