From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Firs (Abies) are a genus of between 48-55 species of evergreen conifers in the family Pinaceae. All are trees, reaching heights of 10-80 m (30-260 ft) tall and trunk diameters of 0.5-4 m (2-12 ft) when mature. Firs can be distinguished from other members of the pine family by their needle-like leaves, attached to the twig by a base that resembles a small suction cup; and by erect, cylindrical cones 5-25 cm (2-10 in) long that disintegrate at maturity to release the winged seeds. Identification of the species is based on the size and arrangement of the leaves, the size and shape of the cones, and whether the bract scales of the cones are long and exserted, or short and hidden inside the cone. They are most closely related to the cedars (Cedrus). Firs are found through much of North and Central America, Europe, Asia, and North Africa, occurring in mountains over most of the range. Firs are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species including Chionodes abella (recorded on White Fir), Autumnal Moth, Conifer Swift (a pest of Balsam Fir), The Engrailed, Grey Pug, Mottled Umber and Pine Beauty. GNU Free Documentation License Birch versus Fir ~ What would be the difference in a craft? Q. I'm trying to copy a craft I saw today. They used 2" birch cubes to make a puzzle. The only 2" cubes I could find on the Internet were made of fir. Knowing nothing about wood, I don't know if that would make a big difference? Would anyone out there know? Thanks! Birch will have a straight grain, fir will have a tough winter grain with soft summer grain, and can be meandering or uneven. I think the fir blocks will work for your craft, even though birch is categorized as a "hardwood," it is softer than the fir. Q. My friend is overweight and is trying to lose weight and she works out a lot. She runs, plays basketball, uses the bicycle and basically works out all day. You say she's working out a lot. What kind of rigor? Can she run 3 miles straight? If she want to lose weight she needs to consume less calories than she burns, work out 3 - 4 times a week and lift weights. 12 - 15 reps for lean muscles. For making sure you're running correctly, I always advise that you time yourself for 3 miles, on each mile. Reduce each mile by 30 seconds and work at that. Also, eat lots of protein and good carbs. Cut back on sweets. You can still eat them, but you need to use moderation.
