Coal is a readily combustible black or brownish-black sedimentary rock normally occurring in rock strata in layers or veins called coal beds. The harder forms, such as anthracite coal, can be regarded as metamorphic rock because of later exposure to elevated temperature and pressure. It is composed primarily of carbon along with variable quantities of other elements, chiefly sulfur, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen. Coal starts as layer upon layer of annual plant remains accumulating slowly that were protected from biodegradation by usually acidic covering waters that gave a natural antiseptic effect combating microorganisms and then later mud deposits protecting against oxidization in the widespread shallow seas — mainly during the Carboniferous period — thus trapping atmospheric carbon in the ground in immense peat bogs that eventually were covered over and deeply buried by sediments under which they metamorphosed into coal. Over time, the chemical and physical properties of the plant remains (believed to mainly have been fern-like species antedating more modern plant and tree species) were changed by geological action to create a solid material. Coal, a fossil fuel, is the largest source of energy for the generation of electricity worldwide, as well as one of the largest worldwide anthropogenic sources of carbon dioxide emissions. Gross carbon dioxide emissions from coal usage are slightly more than those from petroleum and about double the amount from natural gas. Coal is extracted from the ground by mining, either underground or in open pits. From Wikipedia under the

The chimney has been dormant for a couple of years. All I need is coal and possibly a chimney sweep. I have a bunch of suppliers in my neighbourhood, but I don't know what kind of coal is recommended or would be best for home use. Please don't tell me, "the black flammable kind". There are actually a few types of coals for home use, they are all black and flammable. Asked by angel of mercy - Sat Jan 17 05:10:43 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. You need to use coal of the bituminous variety. Anthracite is desirable, but you must use a burner that is made specifically for anthracite. I reccomend larger chunks for longer burning. Answered by jakeb - Sat Jan 17 07:39:53 2009 How many kilograms of coal must be burned to produce the same energy as 1.0 kg of 23592U? Q. When 1.0 kg of coal is burned, about 3.0 107 J of energy is released. If the energy released per 23592U fission is 2.0 102 MeV, how many kilograms of coal must be burned to produce the same energy as 1.0 kg of 23592U? Asked by physicsstudent - Tue Jan 8 19:01:40 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. firstly, you need to work out how many atoms of uranium make up a kilogram (it weighs 235g per mole) it will be of order 10^24. then convert electron volts to Joules (times eV by 1.6 x 10^-19 and this is then in joules) then work out the difference in energy between the kilogram of uranium and the kilogram of coal. i would calculate this for you, but i think i've given good enough hints here. hope this helps, you should find it takes a lot of coal! Q. Okay, so I want to plant some strawberries where a coal pile used to be. The soil has coal remains in it, and I am wondering if this will do any harm to my berries? Thanks! Asked by Lucy - Tue May 27 23:51:12 2008 - - 3 Answers - 1 Comments A. I wouldn't think so. Add some good soil amendments - ask the nursery people - mulch, & you should have a good crop.
